Bruce wants to hold talks with Wigan

Steve Bruce is tempted to make a shock return to Wigan Athletic.

The Birmingham manager will reportedly hold talks with the Latics - where he had a six-week spell in charge in 2001 - if the Blues give him permission.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has offered a record-breaking £3million compensation package in a bid to lure Bruce away from St Andrews.

Whelan is keen to exploit the uncertainty surrounding Bruce's future at Birmingham, whose prospective new owner Carson Yeung snubbed the chance to authorise a new deal for the manager.

A source close to Bruce told the Manchester Evening News: "Steve has worked with Dave Whelan in the past and got on fine with him and the club even though it was for only around six weeks.

"He has been trying for a new contract at Birmingham for six months and, if Birmingham give him permission, he would like to talk to Wigan.

"Everything is up in the air at Birmingham. He doesn't know how much money he will have to spend in January and has no guarantees about his own future."
