Bruised sprinter Dwain is an instant hit with the Tigers fans

Dwain Chambers talked ambiguously about a 'possible next time' but it was hard not to feel that his first game in rugby league might also be his last.

More than 3,000 descended on The Jungle yesterday — more than 15 times the average for a reserve game — to see the shamed sprinter end his month's trial at Castleford Tigers with a specially arranged friendly against York City Knights.

Chambers, 30, took the hits surprisingly well and the crowd appreciated it. He also made a couple of tackles and hurt a shoulder but that did not stop him bowing to fans as he exited. There were few chances to show his pace in a 39-minute display made up of four spells on the pitch, and he looked exhausted. "I was out of gas every 10 seconds because that's as far as I normally go," he joked.

Cas are unlikely to offer him anything more than an extension to the trial. Yet with no money but plenty of bruises, Chambers was delighted to finish with body and pride intact.

"Rugby league has made me happy," he said. "People were expecting it to be a publicity stunt but it was a chance to redeem myself as an individual.

"I think their players were surprised at how competitive I was. I heard a couple of them say, 'Bloody hell, he's tough!'

"I'm not used to being banged up. I'm sure I'll feel the effects tomorrow. It's something I've got to get used to should there be a future in the sport."
