Buck rounds on Chelsea fans but gives Grant no guarantee

Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck has rounded on fans for barracking Avram Grant, but stopped short of saying the Israeli will still be the manager beyond this summer.

Asked if Grant would keep his job beyond the current campaign, Buck said: "It is a Yes or No question and I'm not going to give you a Yes or No answer.

"But let me give a perspective on it. In September, when Jose Mourinho left and Avram came on board, the board and Roman Abramovich did not expect that we would be sitting here as a semi-finalist in the Champions League and three points off the top of the Premier League.

"We thought that when you change managers, you have to have some rebuilding. So we are unbelievably happy we're where we are now. We would have wished that we would have beaten Barnsley and Tottenham and whatever, but we are reasonably happy with where we are now.

"Avram has a multi-year contract and he's our manager. Having said that, and don't take this the wrong way, every manager at every club is judged by results. That's the name of the game and right now Avram's results are very, very good, so he's our manager."

Buck, speaking as a guest of one of Chelsea's "Star on a Stool" evenings, hit out at fans who have been critical of Grant, saying: "I was annoyed during the Arsenal match when some people were singing 'You don't know what you're doing', and Jose's name. My perspective is — you're either a Chelsea fan or you're not."

Chelsea are furious with Sky TV and the Barclays Premier League because their penultimate match at Newcastle is being put back 48 hours to May 5.

The switch affords Manchester United two more days' rest over their rivals before the final games on May 11 and gives fans little time to make alternative travel arrangements on a Bank Holiday.
