Buckler takes National pounding

Aiming to give champion trainer Paul Nicholls his first success in the big race, he will carry the same weight as Niche Market, the horse he beat narrowly at Newbury last Saturday.
But Niche Market's trainer Bob Buckler admitted he has been left more than a little perplexed by the framing of the weights by the BHA's official handicapper, announced this morning.
"After we were beaten at Newbury, Phil Smith told me he'd put him up one or two pounds, so I can't quite understand how he's managed to put me up to 11st 4lb," said Buckler, who was looking at 11st 1lb. "It's workable, but I can't quite see how he's got there. We were beaten after all, and Tricky Trickster hasn't gone up as much." Niche Market, Irish National winner last season, is 12-1 joint favourite with Ladbrokes to win the four-and-a-half-mile English version, but is 16-1 with Paddy Power.
Albertas Run, Madison Du Berlais and Notre Pere jointly head the handicap on 11st 10lb. Last year's 100-1 winner Mon Mome will have to carry 7lb more than the 11st he shouldered last April and is now a 25-1 chance with Paddy Power.
The same firm offer 16-1 that champion jockey Tony McCoy will break his duck in the race after 14 previously unsuccessful attempts.
Grand National (Paddy Power odds):
10 Tricky Trickster, 16 Niche Market, War Of Attrition, 20 Black Apalachi, Big Fella Thanks, Possol, Vic Venturi, 25 State Of Play, Comply Or Die, Character Building, Mon Mome, Backstage,
Dream Alliance, 33-1 bar.
