Bullish Devonish insists: My best is yet to come over 100m

Marlon Devonish is adamant he can pull out a fast time at next Friday's IAAF Golden League meeting in Oslo and clinch the 100metres slot for the European Cup later this month.

Devonish rubbished a suggestion he should challenge for the 200m place in the Norwich Union GB side after Tyrone Edgar became Europe's quickest 100m man this summer with a time of 10.06seconds in Geneva on Saturday.

"I've always said the fastest man should be given the place in the team and I stand by that," said Devonish, who opened his season with a mark of 10.18sec to finish sixth in yesterday's Berlin Golden League meeting.

Devonish knows if he is to be chosen for the two-day cup event beginning in Annecy, France, on June 21 - with the side being picked on June 9 - Oslo will be the only opportunity to prove himself worthy, and he is confident he can come up trumps.

"I didn't run my race properly (in Berlin) so I know there is plenty of room for improvement," said 32-year-old Devonish, whose personal best is also 10.06sec.

"It's a case of getting back into the groove and I'm sure I will. For my first 100m of the season that wasn't bad.

Devonish added: "I only started with 10.25sec last year and you saw how quickly my times came down. Now I'm aiming to get the spot - I believe I can do it."

The opening Golden League meeting saw Michael Rimmer, having recovered from bronchitis, well out of contention in his 800m race when he was elevated from the 'B' event into the main competition.

The British champion for the last two years finished eighth in 1min 47.32sec but believed he had made the right decision to compete at this level.

Rimmer said: "I can't complain after having missed three weeks' training because of the bronchitis. I came here to test myself and I can live with the result."

Former Commonwealth champion Michael East, in his season's 1500m debut, finished 12th in a time of 3min 36.48sec while Andy Turner clocked 13.71sec and finished eighth in his 110m hurdles race.

Joice Maduaka lost the opportunity of victory in her 100m race after slipping at the start and had to settle for seventh in 11.71sec.

Olympic heptathlon medal candidate Jessica Ennis will have an MRI scan this morning for an injury to her right ankle.

Ennis was forced to pull out of the the IAAF World Challenge Hypo Meeting in Gotzis on Saturday after the recurrence of a recent training injury.

The Commonwealth heptathlon bronze medallist was in second place after the opening day's action, but withdrew as a precautionary measure.

Ennis said: "I am gutted because it had been a good first day. There are no regrets about coming here but I would not have wanted anything to develop so I decided to withdraw from the second day.

"But I am going to keep positive. My ankle is sore and we shall see what the scan shows."

Meanwhile, Dwain Chambers will chase the 100m Olympic qualifying time of 10.85sec on Wednesday in Greece, which would enable him to compete at next month's trials in Birmingham.

Organisers of the Kalamata International meeting confirmed his entry, which will be the former drug cheat's first 100m race for almost two years.
