Bulls understand the draw of Wembley

There's no excuse for the Bradford Bulls squad not understanding what's at stake when they take on Huddersfield Giants this Sunday in the Carnegie Challenge Cup Quarter Finals at Grattan Stadium (ko 2.15pm).

That's because three of the current Bulls outfit appeared in the last Challenge Cup Final to be played at Wembley before the stadium closed for rebuilding.

Marcus St Hilaire, Terry Newton and skipper Iestyn Harris all wore the colours of Leeds Rhinos when they defeated London Broncos in the 1999 showpiece and therefore the trio know all about the unique experience of appearing at the national stadium.

And now – with the Bulls just two wins away from a place at the new Wembley in August this year – two of those players have revealed that the stadium and the Carnegie Challenge Cup Final has a very special place in their Rugby League past and hopefully in their future.

"Going to Wembley was the highlight of my career and a dream come true. It's a great family occasion for everyone and as it was the last Challenge Cup Final to be played at the old Wembley, it was even more special", said St Hilaire who's been in superb form for the Bulls this season.

"I know it's the ambition of every Rugby League player to go there and to do it again would be fantastic, particularly with this year being the first at the new super stadium.

"There's nothing I would like more than to get to the final this year", added the former Huddersfield and Leeds player.

And speaking in the Bradford Telegraph and Argus newspaper Bulls skipper Iestyn Harris has endorsed these comments and is urging his Bulls team-mates to make sure they stay in contention for an appearance in this year's Final.

"Those memories [of Wembley] stay with you forever," Harris told the paper.

"It would be great to win at the new Wembley as the first team back there but that chance only comes around once and we have to take it."

Harris - the last skipper to lift the Challenge Cup at the famous venue – is also warning that the Bulls must be at their best this weekend to stay in the competition.

"The only important thing about this weekend is winning and getting ourselves in the hat for those semis," he added.

Harris added: ""It's a massive game for us. We're at home, which is always a blessing, but it's not too long ago that Huddersfield got their first win against Bradford in engage Super League and there's certainly going to be some spice in this one."
