Burnley boss Coyle's new swoop for Dundee ace McDonald

Looking to strengthen: Burnley manager Owen Coyle has money to spend after the sale of Kyle Lafferty

Burnley could be poised to sign Dundee's talented midfielder Kevin McDonald within a matter of days.

Turf Moor boss Owen Coyle has already had one bid of around £400,000 for the Scotland Under-21 star rejected by Dundee.

But, last night, he was ready to increase his offer in order to land a player he regards as one of the top talents in the country.

After selling Kyle Lafferty to Rangers last week, Burnley have cash to spend and Coyle has made McDonald his top signing priority.

It is understood the 19-year-old midfielder, who has been linked with Celtic and Everton, views a switch to the Championship as a good career move.

Dundee are holding out for at least £500,000 for the player but, even though they want him to stay in order to spearhead their push for promotion to the SPL next season, they know they can't stand in his way if he wants to move on.

Meantime, Paul Dixon last night revealed that the time he spent in the doldrums at Dundee has made him even more determined to succeed with neighbours Dundee United.

The 21-year-old left-back signed a three-year deal with Craig Levein's side yesterday after the clubs agreed a £25,000 compensation package to allow Dixon to move to Tannadice under freedom of contract.

The Scotland Under-21 star was one of the most highly-rated players at Dens Park.

But he experienced a difficult time towards the end of last season after deciding his future lay elsewhere and was dropped from the side.

Dixon admits his form dipped last term but insisted that leaving the club he had been associated with since the age of 12 to sign for United, his boyhood heroes, will rejuvenate his career.

He said: 'It's good to get my future sorted. I wanted to move on but I will always be grateful to Dundee for giving me my chance in the game.'
