Burnley cleared for talks with St Johnstone manager Coyle

Burnley have been given the go-ahead to open talks with St Johnstone manager Owen Coyle about the Turf Moor vacancy.

The clubs have agreed on a compensation settlement for the 41-year-old former Republic of Ireland striker who has made an encouraging start to his management career.

Coyle will tomorrow hold discussions with the Clarets who parted company with former boss Steve Cotterill earlier this month.

St Johnstone secretary Stewart Duff said: "Burnley have increased their offer of compensation to a level which is acceptable to us and as such they have permission to talk to Owen Coyle."

Duff refused to give details of the compensation payment, however the Irn-Bru First Division side were believed to be seeking £150,000.

The timing for Saints is unfortunate, as they prepare to face Dunfermline in Sunday's SFL Challenge Cup final.

Duff said: "It doesn't help, but c'est la vie."

Coyle led Saints to last season's Scottish Cup semi-finals, and they only missed out on promotion to the Clydesdale Bank Premier League when Gretna scored a last-gasp winner at Ross County on the final day of the campaign.

He previously had a short spell in charge of Falkirk, where he and John Hughes were co-managers in 2003.

A statement on Burnley's official website read: "Burnley Football Club has today been granted permission to negotiate with St Johnstone manager Owen Coyle over the vacancy at Turf Moor.

"A compensation package has been agreed between the two clubs if Coyle is appointed and he will now travel for talks on Thursday morning."
