Button race for fitness

Jenson Button is fighting to be fit for tomorrow. The Honda driver's miserable season took another turn for the worse when he pulled out of yesterday afternoon's free practice session with a back twinge.

Button, who travelled to London to be examined, said: "I needed to rest but I'm hopeful I will be able to compete."

Button: back trouble

The Briton, 27, whose only point of the year came in last week's French Grand Prix, is suffering from a recurrence of the injury sustained in a first-lap smash in last month's American Grand Prix.

Button could be handed an escape route from his problems at Honda — by his old team Renault.

Although he maintains he intends to stay at Honda, Renault's director of engineering Pat Symonds said they would welcome Button back.

Meanwhile, Red Bull have extended the contract of David Coulthard, 36, into next season.
