Caddyshack star Murray detained for drink-driving joyride in a golf buggy

Bill Murray was stopped by Stockholm police and tested for drink-driving after he was found at the wheel of a golf cart en route to his hotel in Sweden.

The officers noticed the Lost in Translation star smelled of alcohol - but he refused to take a breath test, saying he was protected by U.S. law.

The 56-year-old later agreed to take a blood test at Norrmalm police station, in the north of the Swedish city.

"He said in the United States you don't have to do it (take a breath test)," said station commander Jan-Olov Lundgren.

"He was very calm and friendly. No problem at all."

The results to his blood test will be ready in two weeks.

He said Murray had signed a statement admitting to having had alcohol and had been released.

Murray had been out with golfing friends who had played in the Scandinavian Masters tournament.

The golf cart was on display outside the hotel where Murray was staying.

Tournament head Fredrik Nislmark said the vehicle was not intended for guests, but added: "I don't hold any grudge against Bill Murray for borrowing our cart for a while."

Lundgren said Murray had been stopped while driving the golf cart from Cafe Opera, an upscale restaurant in the centre of town, back to his hotel.

Murray was nominated for an Oscar for his leading role in Lost in Translation and is the star of numerous comedy blockbusters, including 1980's Caddyshack, which lampoons the world of country club golfing.

Representatives for Murray could not be reached for comment.
