Calamity - James in the dock again as England fall to a spot kick but don't panic says Fabio, it'll be OK by September

Fabio Capello told the country not to panic last night after England slipped to a 1-0 defeat against Euro 2008 favourites France.

David Beckham's 100th cap and Rio Ferdinand's arrival as captain were overshadowed by David 'Calamity' James who gave away a first-half penalty when he brought down Nicolas Anelka, enabling Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery to score from the spot.

Despite failing to create any decent chances in 90 minutes, England boss Capello said he was optimistic about the future and insisted he will fine tune his squad in time for the start of the World Cup qualifying campaign in September.

He said: 'We will be ready for the friendly against the Czech Republic on August 20. We made progress compared to the Switzerland game and I'm happy.'

Capello refused to blame James for the penalty while the goalkeeper said: 'I am disappointed with it, but I was a bit exposed. Anelka is not short of pace and I tried to get out of the way of him, but he was just a bit too quick.'

The England coach claimed he has a clearer picture of the players he will use for the 2010 World Cup campaign after this showing in Paris.

'I saw some very good things, especially because we were playing against a top level team,' added Capello.

'That showed us what our value and worth are. The team showed that they did not want to lose the game so I'm happy.

'Another thing I am happy about is that we played two different ways. My ideas about the future are a lot clearer.'

Capello scrapped the 4-5-1 system at half-time, sacrificing Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard and Joe Cole, but his side still failed to make an impact.

The England chief substituted 100-club newcomer Beckham in the 60th minute. Beckham said: 'When I first started playing for England I never dreamed of getting 100 caps.

'I want to carry on, I've proved my fitness and I felt great. It is a proud moment. To be up there with Bobby Moore, Peter Shilton, Billy Wright, and Sir Bobby Charlton makes me feel honoured to be in their company.'

Capello, who has a friendly against the U.S.A. in May and Trinidad & Tobago in June added: 'I was very happy with Beckham's game.'

There are number of injury concerns. Frank Lampard missed the game with a stomach upset, while Jonathan Woodgate (hamstring), John Terry (hamstring), Gerrard (hamstring) and skipper Ferdinand (hamstring) are all struggling.

Ferdinand, who was captain for the first time, said: 'It was a huge honour, there is no prouder man on the planet.'
