Capello kicks England's autumn date with Scotland into touch

A Scottish Football Association proposal to play England during the vacant international friendly week in November has been kicked into touch by Fabio Capello.

After admitting defeat in their efforts to publicly convince the Tartan Army to put up the cash for a £1million glamour friendly with Argentina, the governing body have already begun scouting alternative options.

And, speaking at the opening of an 'Auld Enemy Exhibition' at the Scottish Football Museum yesterday, Scotland boss George Burley admitted the English had already ruled themselves out of contention.

'We spoke to the FA about a game in the summer and we went a bit further on from there,' said Burley.

'But they said they had games in place until around 2010. They were keen to have a game and so were we. And I would have thought that in the next three years we will be able to sort out some date for a Scotland-England game.

'That would capture people's imagination, but the summer was not right for us. We didn't know if Rangers and Celtic were going on tour and as it worked out we had something like 10 players unavailable.

'England wanted a decision quickly, but though that wasn't possible. Fabio Capello said he was keen to play and so am I.

'Neither that nor the Argentina game were possible, so now we move on to try to get some cracking opposition for November. 'If we could get Spain or Portugal, and it's viable, then why not? The SFA will be talking to other nations and looking at different possibilities.'
