Captain Cook is off to a flyer

Alastair Cook, one of three England Test players who didn't make the World Cup squad, began the new season with a century for MCC against county champions Sussex in the curtain-raiser at Lord's yesterday.

Cook, leading a side that included Matthew Hoggard and Steve Harmison, reached his ton off 159 balls and went on to score 142 in MCC's 332 for six.

Kent captain Robert Key has admitted tampering with the ball by rubbing it with sandpaper during a pre-season friendly with Notts at Canterbury last week. No action will be taken against Key, who said: "I was a bit naive."
