Carling Cup may switch to summer

Plans are underway to overhaul the Carling Cup by creating a pre-season "Premier League Cup" to be played in different countries around the world.

The proposal, which would also bring an end to the Community Shield, sees the 20 top-flight clubs divided into five groups of four, each containing a top seed. They would play in a mini-knockout, with the winners progressing to the quarter-finals. The three remaining spots would be taken by Football League sides.

The Premier League would like to replace the Community Shield, which pits the previous season's FA Cup winners against the league champions, with something to satisfy the global thirst for English football. But they will need the permission of the Football League to go ahead with their idea.
