Carrick gets giddy over Treble talk

Michael Carrick still has to pinch himself to realise that he could secure three trophies in his first season at Old Trafford.

The midfielder signed for Manchester United in an £18.6million deal from Tottenham last summer.

Level-headed: Michael Carrick says he is not getting carried away by United's treble dream

Although the chance of winning major honours was one of the central reasons for his move north, Carrick did not think he would enter the final month of the campaign still retaining an interest in the Premiership title, FA Cup and Champions League.

However, while United head to Everton tomorrow boasting a three-point lead over Chelsea at the top of the table, the 25-year-old is refusing to get carried away.

"I didn't think I would be in with a shout of three trophies in my first season," he said. "As soon as I arrived, I was thinking about challenging for things because that is what this club is all about.

"But I didn't think at this stage we would be going as strong as we are. We are in a good position but it can be thrown away as quickly as we have earned it. We are well aware of that, which is why we are not getting carried away."

A victory for United tomorrow will go a long way towards ending a four-year title drought, so the only change anticipated is the introduction of Alan Smith, possibly for Darren Fletcher.

Such a move would leave Carrick to resume a central midfield partnership with Paul Scholes that has been so devastating for United this term.

"We have just got stronger and stronger as the season has gone on," said Carrick.

"Just playing with Paul teaches you a lot. He makes the game look very easy."
