Castleford Tigers crash to shock and Orr show

Danny Orr, the local hero who was devastated when Castleford lost an epic Challenge Cup semi-final to the old London Broncos in 1999, demolished his home-town club in last night's extraordinary fourth round tie. Orr, at 29 the only survivor from the semifinal in which the Londoners snatched a last gasp try to reach Wembley, wears Quins colours now.

And he looked to be in for more disappointment as Castleford Tigers went in 14-0 in front at half-time at the Twickenham Stoop. But Quins, with scrum-half Orr crowning a man-of-the-match performance with a brilliant solo try, turned the game upside down with a seven-try romp.

Touchdown: Danny Orr dives over

Dwain Chambers, the shamed athlete who is lined up for his Castleford debut in the reserve team next Sunday, could only watch stone-faced from a seat in the stand as his team mates succumbed to an astonishing defeat.

On the eve of this game, Orr recalled his home town's defeat nine years ago as one of the lowest points of his career. This win must have been one of the highest.

He was at the forefront of the Quins' challenge yesterday and the triumvirate of Orr, veteran Kiwi Henry Paul and hooker Chad Randall provided the hub of their team's best work. It looked to be of no avail as Castleford, struggling to make an impact in Super League after winning promotion last season, forged into a 14-0 lead.

Coached by former Broncos captain Terry Matterson, who still has regrets that he retired the year before the club reached Wembley, Castleford were desperate to improve on their own dismal record in the competition. They had managed to get beyond the fourth-round stage only once since 1999, invariably distracted by the priority of trying to stay in Super League or regain their elite status.

With no promotion or relegation to worry about this year and with another prominent scrum-half in Australian Brent Sherwin at their disposal, they played with increasing confidence after a shaky start.

Sherwin's superb 40-20 kick set up Castleford's first try for centre Michael Shenton. Even the loss of two-goal Craig Huby, with a shoulder injury, failed to subdue Castleford and they extended their lead with a try from winger Adam Fletcher and a Kirk Dixon penalty.

The Quins' comeback began early in the second half, a greater level of intensity leading to tries under the posts from back-rower Michael Worrincy and Randall, both goaled by skipper Rob Purdham.

Within six minutes they had cut the deficit to two points and a Purdham penalty levelled things up soon afterwards.

It was just as if Castleford had stayed in their dressing room 10 minutes too long at half-time. They had lost their momentum completely and could not get out of their own half.

Inevitably, Quins turned the screw although the video referee deliberated long and hard before sanctioning Tony Clubb's 59th minute touchdown when he beat Fletcher to Orr's high kick. Then Orr, with a brilliant burst of acceleration and a shimmy, cut through the nervy Castleford defence for the try of the match and more followed from David Howell, Garreth Haggerty and Danny Ward.

Purdham's goal-kicking was immaculate and Castleford were totally humbled.
