The goalkeeper had hoped to be fit for tonight's Carling Cup semi-final against Everton but bruising to his hip and side is still causing him pain.

The problem ruled him out from a return to training with the team yesterday.

On the comeback trail: Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech

Cech got injured at Blackburn just before Christmas and although he made a comeback against Aston Villa on Boxing Day, he was not fully fit.

The Czech international has missed the three games since and is under no great pressure to rush back with Carlo Cudicini now in full training after a rib injury.

But Cech, who has also had a lingering calf problem, is desperate to play again after being sidelined for five games in November and December.
