Celtic to answer charges over Dida 'attack'

UEFA have opened disciplinary proceedings against Celtic following the incident during Wednesday's Champions League match in which a spectator confronted AC Milan goalkeeper Dida.

The incident came in the immediate aftermath of Scott McDonald's last-minute winner in a thrilling 2-1 victory.

The fan, who has since been identified and banned by the club for life, made contact with Dida who proceeded to briefly give chase before collapsing to the ground theatrically before being carried off on a stretcher.

The Scottish club will have to answer charges of "lack of organisation and improper conduct of supporters."

Celtic chairman Brian Quinn urged UEFA to investigate the "antics" of Dida but there has been no word of punishment for the playacting Brazilian.

The Milan goalkeeper in fact looks set to play in Sunday's clash at Lazio despite his dramatic collapse and Milan director general Ariedo Braida said: 'he is still our first choice.'

UEFA's control and disciplinary body will deal with the case at their next plenary meeting on October 11.

In addition, UEFA are seeking clarification from AC Milan on the reason for the substitution of Dida.

UEFA communications director William Gaillard said that the decision to ask Milan to explain the substitution of Dida was probably prompted by what was in the reports they received from referee Markus Merk and UEFA delegate Andreas Akkelides.

He said: "It is up to AC Milan to provide an explanation and it is probably something to do with what was in the referee and delegate's reports.

"But it is under investigation so I can't say much more about it."

A spokesman for Celtic said: "We will co-operate in anyway we can."
