Celtic's Cuthbert faces bitter-sweet day when he captains Scotland Under 21s
20 May 2008
The 20-year-old is determined to turn in a performance which would make Burns proud but admitted he is still struggling to come to terms with his death.
"Even though we knew he wasn't doing so well, it was still unexpected when Tommy died," said Cuthbert.
Members of the public pay tribute to Tommy Burns who died last week, outside Celtic Park, Glasgow
"He was such a strong character that you didn't expect this to happen. He signed me on an S-form and gave me my first full-time contract. Tommy played a huge part in all the players' lives - he saw us come through from Under-12s onwards.
"It was unbelievable. He would work with the young boys first thing in the day and still be at Parkhead to take the Under-15s at night."
Cuthbert expects to be bursting with pride tonight and added: "It'll be brilliant, especially since the game is at Rugby Park, where Tommy was also the manager. I'll be attending his funeral in the morning. It's going to be an emotional day."
Manager Billy Stark, who played with Burns and was his assistant at Kilmarnock and Celtic, believes the day will be a test of endurance.
"You just have to get on as best you can," he said. "This is as difficult as it gets but we'll just need to get through it."
