Champions splash £30 million on Anderson and Nani

Manchester United were last night in the process of investing an astonishing £50million in the defence of their Premiership title after agreeing deals for midfielders Nani and Anderson with Portuguese clubs Sporting Lisbon and Porto.

Having already agreed a fee of £17m with Bayern Munich for Owen Hargreaves — due to be completed next week — United chief executive David Gill and assistant manager Carlos Queiroz spent a productive day on the continent yesterday, securing two of the hottest properties in the Portuguese league.

Boy from Brazil: Manchester United's new target, Anderson

Late last night, United confirmed they had agreed deals for both players, with left-sided midfielder Nani costing £14.25m from Porto and Brazilian prospect Anderson — who plays as a second striker — being valued at an astonishing £17.8m.

A substantial chunk of both fees is likely to be appearance and performance related. Both players have agreed personal terms and need medicals, with Anderson also waiting on a work permit.

But with the 19-year-old expected to make his Brazil debut in next month's Copa America and known in South America as the next Ronaldinho', his potential to bring something special to English football will surely be recognised by the Home Office.

The United camp were last night said to be cock-a-hoop' at clinching the signings of two players admired by Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho.

Off to Old Trafford: Portuguese prospect Nani

With strikers such as Barcelona's Samuel Eto'o and Tottenham's Dimitar Berbatov still high on manager Sir Alex Ferguson's agenda, it is likely United's spending will rise still further. Nani is recognised as one of Portugal's brightest prospects, despite starting only 29 games for his club and five for his country.

Gill spent a hard day bargaining with Sporting yesterday and eventually agreed to meet the get-out clause in the 20-year-old's contract after Nani told the club he wanted to leave. Anderson began at Gremio — the same club as Ronaldinho — playing in the same position.

He has started only 21 times for his club, largely because he was injured at the start of Porto's championshipwinning season.

Ryan Giggs last night revealed he is quitting international football in a bid to win the Champions League for a second time at United.

Giggs, 33, will collect his 64th and final cap for Wales against the Czech Republic in his home town of Cardiff on Saturday.

The winger said: I have a massive motivation to win the Champions League after coming so close this season. It's the only competition I've won once and I want to win it again.'
