Channon set to be released from hospital later this week

Mick Channon is set to be released from hospital just a week after surviving a fatal car crash that saw the death of his friend Tim Corby.

Channon's son, Michael, says that his father is "starting to climb the walls" at the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham and that a return to his West Ilsley base "should be towards the middle of this week".

Michael, writing on Channon's website, www.mickchannon.tv today, said: "I'd like to express my family's heartfelt gratitude for all of the well-wishes we have received.

"Mick remains in Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre where he is starting to climb the walls with concern for the operation at West Ilsley.

"His biggest concern is for our 80-strong staff, with particular consideration for their families and children for whom he feels responsible."

Channon suffered broken ribs, a broken arm, a fractured jaw and a punctured lung in the accident on the M1 last Wednesday but is recovering well after surgery.

Michael said that although Channon spends every waking hour trying to trounce the opposition, his father sends his thanks to the trainers who have sent their best wishes, especially David Elsworth and Richard Hannon - who he playfully refers to as "that bastard". Michael added: "I make no apologies for saying this, but the man is incredible. Mick will be back as soon as the fabulous medical team are prepared to release him, which should be towards the middle of this week.

"Tim was his perfect foil. Mick and Tim loved working at the sales together at this stage of the year and saw it as an opportunity to beat the big guns. Tim was crazy about racing. I used to think he'd swallowed a Timeform such was his knowledge of bloodlines. We'll miss him."
