Chapple-Hyam bounces back with Watson

It didn't take long for the gloom which enveloped Peter Chapple-Hyam following the Eclipse defeat of Authorized to lift when Winker Watson came from an impossible position to win yesterday's July Stakes at Newmarket.

With only two furlongs to go in the Group Two contest the Piccolo colt was plum last of the 13 runners as jockey Jimmy Fortune dropped him in behind from his unfavourable draw in stall one.

But he picked up in great style to nail the well-backed River Proud on the finishing line, defying the 3lb penalty he incurred for winning the Norfolk Stakes.

A smiling Chapple-Hyam said: "Jimmy said the horse got him out of trouble. His class gets him through from a bad draw and everything going wrong. I'm delighted for everyone concerned — this is a proper result.

"He will have a bit of a break and then go for the Prix Morny (at Deauville on August 19). This was a stiff six furlongs so I see no reason why he won't get a mile next year."

Winker Watson is a best-priced 14-1 with Coral for the 2,000 Guineas with River Proud 25-1.

Chapple-Hyam said that Authorized, his Derby hero, had come out of his Sandown race well but that a decision regarding a run in the King George will be taken next week.

He revealed that Frankie Dettori had telephoned him on Saturday evening to apologise for not going stands side and tracking Notnowcato and Ryan Moore in the Eclipse.

Dettori took yesterday off after complaining of a sore back. He starts a 14-day ban today for his whip use on Ramonti, winner of last month's Queen Anne Stakes.

Meanwhile, Moore's brilliant July continued when he brought the enigmatic Papal Bull with a devastating run to beat the deadheaters Laverock and Shahin in the Princess of Wales's Stakes.
