Charlton release eight

Charlton have confirmed that eight players have left The Valley after the club's relegation to the Championship, with striker Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink and defender Talal El Karkouri heading the list.

Hasselbaink, 35, scored just two Premiership goals for the Addicks after joining from Middlesbrough last summer while 30-year-old El Karkouri netted eight times during his three-year spell with the club.

Goalkeeper Thomas Myhre and striker Kevin Lisbie - who once scored a Premiership hat-trick against Liverpool - have also left the club.

The other out-of-contract players to be released are Nathan Ashton, Rurik Gislason, Alistair John and Myles Weston, while James Walker - who enjoyed loan spells with Bristol Rovers, Leyton Orient and Notts County last season - has been offered a new deal.

The Addicks sold star striker Darren Bent to Tottenham for £16.5million yesterday.
