Cheers for Kear - Even an injury crisis can’t halt Wakefield

John Kear's injury ravaged Wakefield made light of their chronic situation as they bundled Shaun McRae's Salford out of the Carnegie Challenge Cup. In the last game of a fourth round which saw 11 of the 12 Super League clubs progress — Castleford the only exception in Saturday's all-Super League tie at Quins — Kear felt his players also proved a point.
"We knew TV were here because they thought there was a chance of a shock," said Kear. "We had 13 players unavailable so it was a very satisfying win in testing circumstances — a clinical performance.

"The tie was also an opportunity to further stake a claim for a Super League licence. Part of the criteria is the depth of a club's playing strength and we showed we've plenty of good players in reserve."
The platform for Wakefield's win was the triumvirate of halfbacks, Jamie Rooney and Danny Brough plus Sam Obst, playing at hooker. They had far too much pace and class for a Salford side intent on a quick return to Super League after relegation but not used to this kind of intensity every week. Brough turned in another top performance to win the Man of the Match vote.
A delighted Kear said: "We had a few indians missing but we had our chiefs, too."
Wakefield did most of the damage with three tries in a five-minute first-half period, including a smart effort from Sean Gleeson, who was sent over by Tony Martin.
Wakefield led 22-8 at the break and Brough killed them off with a try early in the second. Salford's only try came from skipper Malcolm Alker on the first-half hooter.
Salford coach McRae admitted: "Wakefield were quicker and more intelligent and they had tremendous ability from dummy half and at half-back."
