Chelsea defender Terry back in training but will only play a supporting role for England

England were boosted today by the return of captain John Terry to training.

The England captain, who has been out of action with a knee injury since October 16, joined in with his team-mates at London Colney as they prepared for the final Euro 2008 qualifier against Croatia at Wembley tomorrow night.

Despite reports claiming Terry will face the Croatians, against whom England need just a point to qualify for the finals in Austria and Switzerland next summer, the Chelsea player is not expected to play.

Terry underwent knee surgery after England's 2-1 defeat to Russia in Moscow a month ago.

His presence was a lift for an England side also lacking Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen and Rio Ferdinand for the meeting with Croatia.

Manager Steve McClaren has indicated he wants players like Terry, Owen, Ferdinand and Rooney in the England dressing room to offer their support before the kick-off in front of a 90,000 capacity crowd.

All of the players in McClaren's squad were able to train at London Colney and most eyes were on David Beckham and Paul Robinson.

Beckham has been the subject of great debate as to whether he is worth his place after an ineffective performance against Austria in Vienna and he could be replaced by Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Beckham focused on England role

Robinson is also under the spotlight and his replacement in Vienna, Scott Carson, could hold on to his place against Croatia.

The Liverpool goalkeeper, on loan to Aston Villa this season, has made a big impression under Martin O'Neill.
