Chelsea's new signing Jose Bosingwa, who had also been wanted by Manchester United, shakes hands with Blues chief executive Peter Kenyon after agreeing a £16.1million move from Porto to the Londoners
Portugal defender Bosingwa, who will represent his adopted country next month at Euro 2008, has been lured by Chelsea with the guarantee of first-team football. Juliano Belletti, your time is up.
Bosingwa's breakthrough move is all the more incredible for coming three years after a car accident nearly killed him. The player, born in the Democratic of Congo, lost control of his car, which swerved off the road and burst into flames.
His escape and subsequent starring role for Porto have led to the 25-year-old becoming the first of up to four stellar signings for Chelsea this summer. Eight players could be on the way out as the club try to trim their first-team squad to 25.
Premier League clubs can name seven substitutes, rather than five, from next season and Chelsea want to make the most of the new rule.
Amauri, a Brazilian striker playing in Italy, is one man interesting Chelsea's army of decision makers. The player has scored 15 goals in 34 appearances for Serie A side Palermo but he would only be a squad player if Chelsea were to follow up their initial inquiry.
Defender Michael Mancienne, who has had two successful loan spells at Queens Park Rangers, has been told he will be promoted to the first-team squad and there may also be a place for striker Scott Sinclair, 19.

Done deal: full-back Jose Bosingwa, in action for Portugal (right), is having a medical today ahead of his move from Porto
Tottenham hope to sign centre back Tal Ben Haim, who has not played since February's 3-1 victory over Huddersfield in the FA Cup. The Israeli could be followed out by midfielder Steve Sidwell, who will learn his fate next week.
Belletti, who picked up the club's goal of the season award for his spectacular effort against Tottenham, will be asked to leave, along with winger Florent Malouda and forward Claudio Pizarro.
Khalid Boulahrouz, who has been on loan to Sevilla, will also be released when a fee can be agreed for the central defender. And a Chelsea source admitted on Monday that, despite Andriy Shevchenko's goal against Bolton on Sunday, "they will personally drive him to anyone who will have him".
There is also the curious case of Branislav Ivanovic, who has not played since he joined from Lokomotiv Moscow in January. At 24, he should be involved with the first-team squad, but no one in the reserves can understand why Chelsea paid £9million for him.
For now, chief executive Peter Kenyon is focused on the acquisition of Bosingwa. Such is the mistrust of Paulo Ferreira, who only recently signed a new contract, and Belletti that the club have been playing Michael Essien at right back.
Bosingwa, signed for Porto by Jose Mourinho in 2003, has taken Ferreira's place in the Portugal side. Chelsea believe the £16m fee for Bosingwa, who had his medical yesterday, represents good value compared with the £21.4m Sevilla had demanded for Dani Alves.
