Chelsea have wasted Wright-Phillips on the wing, says City coach

Chelsea were today accused of wasting Shaun Wright-Phillips' talent - by the man who helped make him a star.

Wright-Phillips joined Chelsea from Manchester City for £21m three years ago, but he is still only a fringe player.

Chelsea take on City at the Eastlands Stadium tomorrow and SWP will be lucky to be on the bench against his old club.

Central character: City's academy director Jim Cassell believes SWP would be a hit for the Blues in the middle

His inability to break through has come as a shock to City's academy director Jim Cassell, who signed SWP at 15 after he was released by Nottingham Forest.

He said: "I still think the Chelsea fans have yet to see the best of Shaun. His ideal position is in midfield and that is where he has had his best games for Chelsea rather than when he's played as a winger.

"When he plays in the centre he has many ways to get past people.

"Shaun is a great guy and a terrific player. He was the first player to break through at City after we had put the academy structure in place.

"People say I did well for him, but I always tell them they're wrong. He did more for us than we ever did for him."

Meanwhile, manager Avram Grant has been told he has taken Chelsea backwards since the departure of Jose Mourinho. Striker Mateja Kezman, who won the title and League Cup in his one season at Chelsea under Mourinho, helped Fenerbahce secure a 2-1 win over Grant's side in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

Kezman said: "Under Mourinho, Chelsea were a machine. They worked for 90 or 95 minutes without mistakes or faults. "If Mourinho had been in charge of this match, it would have been different. In his time there were no surprises.

"Now they don't have the same spirit in the team any more. We are full of confidence for the second leg. We will not show as much respect for them."
