Chelsea were on the brink of their first Champions League title when Terry stepped- up to take his spot-kick in a dramatic shoot-out against Manchester United in Moscow.

Terry slips, and for a moment, Cech was convinced of European glory

The game had ended with the scores level at 1-1 after extra-time and Cech's penalty save from Cristiano Ronaldo had given the Blues the advantage in the shoot-out.

But Terry slipped as he took his penalty and the ball went agonisingly wide with Edwin van der Sar diving in the opposite direction.

Cech admits he initially thought Terry had put his penalty away to give Chelsea victory.

Cech: we were the better side

"When I saw the goalkeeper going the other way, from my position I thought I saw the ball going in," Cech said.

"Then it was out but these can happen. It showed the story of the game really.

We hit the post twice and in the last moment, when the goalkeeper dived the opposite way, John Terry slipped. It would have been in if he hadn't."

Cech admitted it was the biggest disappointment of his Chelsea career and insisted Avram Grant's side were the better team for most of the game.

United had taken the lead in the 26th minute when Ronaldo headed his 42nd goal of the season.

But Chelsea hauled themselves level on the stroke of half-time thanks to a Frank Lampard goal.

Didier Drogba and Lampard both hit the woodwork for Chelsea but they could not force a winning goal in 120 minutes of never-jangling football.

United won the trophy for a third time when van der Sar saved Nicolas Anelka's spot- kick to leave Cech and his team-mates devastated by the dramatic turn of events.

"It is a huge disappointment for all of us because for the biggest part of the game, we were the better side," Cech added.

"We were unlucky and I feel really sorry for everyone in the group. We deserved to win but ended up losing it.

"This is the worst feeling because this was the biggest final and when you lose it like that then, of course you are disappointed."
