Chelsea to cover cost of fans' trip to Everton and will even buy the tickets

Chelsea are to pay for their fans to travel to the rearranged game at Everton in two weeks after failing to get the match switched from Thursday 17 April.

The game was originally scheduled for 19 April but was moved so that Sky could screen it live.

The decision outraged Chelsea as it means they now have to play twice in four days at a key time in the Premier League title race, with a game against Wigan already scheduled on Monday of that week.

Now the Blues will use their anticipated £400,000 fee to ferry their 3,000 supporters to Goodison Park and also to pay for their match tickets.

A club statement said today: "Chelsea FC has continued to make very strong representations for the date of the Everton away game to be changed.

"This now seems unlikely. Under these circumstances Chelsea FC believes it would be inappropriate to profit from the television fee for this match.

"This decision has been taken due to the unique circumstances of this one off case. Instead the fee will be used to purchase the available away tickets at no charge to our supporters and to procure as many trains and/or coaches as possible needed to get them to the game and home safely, also at no charge.

"Some fans have already bought tickets and this cost will be refunded. Full details on refunds and how fans can get tickets will be available from midday tomorrow on www.chelseafc.com.

"Once again the club would like to reiterate its strong opposition to the decision to switch the game on sporting integrity, fan and precedent grounds."
