The Wigan chairman, whose team host leaders Manchester United on Sunday, also revealed how Sir Alex Ferguson had sent him a congratulatory email after Heskey's late goal secured the Latics a 1-1 draw last month.
With Chelsea, who are at home to Bolton, and United locked on 84 points and the champions ahead on goal difference, those two points dropped at Stamford Bridge will prove decisive, according to Whelan.

Knockout blow? Cech and Bridge can only look on as Emile Heskey equalises for Wigan last month to deny Blues two crucial points
He said: "I think Emile's goal could have cost Chelsea the title because, had they beaten us, no matter what United do this weekend, Chelsea would have won it if they beat Bolton.
"We got a little email from Sir Alex Ferguson when we drew at Chelsea saying 'thank you very much, it was a great point' - and it was a great point. But Avram Grant has done a superb job at Chelsea because they were so far behind at that stage."
Joe Cole insisted, though, that Chelsea can not only clinch the League title but also win the Champions League because of Didier Drogba.
He said: "A lot of top players who have won awards aren't big game players, but Didier is the main man. With him in our team, we can win anything."
Whelan has also promised that his team will put pressure on United.
"The talk of us rolling over and letting them win is absolute rubbish because there is nothing we would like better than to beat United," he added.
