City and Boro eye Adriano

Manchester City are ready to rival Middlesbrough in a bid to take Inter Milan striker Adriano on a surprise one-year loan deal.

Boro boss Gareth Southgate is after a striker ahead of the departure of Aiyegbeni Yakubu to Everton.

Adriano, 25, has fallen out with Inter coach Roberto Mancini over his weight problems and is not expected to play following the arrival of Honduras star David Suazo.

Adriano is reluctant to take a temporary deal but Inter are determined to push him out.

The Italian club confirmed yesterday they would be willing to sanction Adriano's departure on a temporary basis, with Parma also reportedly keen to snap him up.

But the powerful 25-year-old, who has made little impact for Inter over the past two seasons due to injuries and a lack of form, insists he is not interested.

"When I could have left the club, I didn't do it," the Brazilian said.

"Now, if I have to leave, I would only do it on a permanent transfer. But my wish is to remain here."

The arrival of David Suazo from Cagliari has added another attacking option to an Inter squad already containing strikers Hernan Crespo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Julio Cruz.

Southgate, meanwhile, is also interested in Heerenveen's Brazil forward Afonso Alves but his £6million price tag is prohibitive and he may not get a work permit.

City have also targeted Real Madrid's Julio Baptista after his loan spell at Arsenal and still want to sign Palermo's Mark Bresciano. Benfica's Nuno Gomes is another alternative.
