City boss Hughes keen to keep Everton and Spurs target Johnson at club

Manchester City are in contract talks aimed at tieing midfielder Michael Johnson, 22, to Eastlands.

Johnson is an £8million target for Everton but manager Mark Hughes said: 'He's a big part of what we want to do here.'

The England Under-21 midfielder has also attracted interest from Liverpool and Tottenham, but Hughes said: 'We have had no enquiries for him.

'He has great potential and it doesn't surprise me that good players like him should attract interest from elsewhere, but from my stance I very much want him to stay and, hopefully, we can resolve his contract negotiations very quickly.'

Johnson played in City's UEFA Cup first leg win against EB Streymur last week.
