City chief Shinawatra wants axed Chelsea boss Grant to replace Sven
27 May 2008
Owner Thaksin Shinawatra is set to offer the axed Chelsea boss a rapid return to the Premier League.
Portugal chief Luiz Felipe Scolari is also in the frame but a City insider told The Sun: “Thaksin has made no secret of his wish to employ Scolari but he’s going cold on that deal and City expect Scolari to snub them and reckon Grant fits the bill.”
Final fling: Now Grant could become a City slicker
Bye-bye Thai: Sven Goran Eriksson is expected to leave City
The first talks with Grant took place immediately after Chelsea beat Liverpool to make the Champions League final.
The report also claimed that the ex-Thai prime minister Shinawatra met Grant’s agent Pini Zahavi at Stamford Bridge the night of the Liverpool game.
Shinawatra is understood to like the idea that a manager who has run Manchester United so close in the Premier League and European Cup could replace Eriksson.
Grant, however, needs to agree his Chelsea pay-off before getting into talks with City.
And he could reveal secrets of his time at Chelsea unless he gets the money he wants as he has yet to agree a ‘gagging clause’ with the Blues as part of his compensation.
Grant has so far been offered around £4.8million of the £7.2m his contract would have paid. But he wants to cut a deal that will allow him to start looking for a new job immediately - with the City post high on the agenda.
