City in Castillo swoop

Manchester City are closing in on a £10million deal to bring Mexico striker Nery Castillo to Eastlands.

Sven Goran Eriksson wants the small, explosive forward to bang in the goals which will help his new-look side book a place in the UEFA Cup.

Hot shot: Mexican striker Nery Castillo impressed with his performances during the Copa America

Castillo currently plays for Greek side Olympiakos and has been in a rich vein of form for his country in the Copa America.

City have already sent officials out to Athens to tie up a deal for the player and he is expected to join them even though his agent is sounding out both Chelsea and Real Madrid about a possible move.

The Daily Mirror reports that City's cash - provided by new owner Thaksin Shinawatra - has made them the biggest bidders in the race.

They claim Castillo could be sold the idea of moving to Eastlands and forming a partnership with new City signing Rolando Bianchi if he thinks it is a stepping stone to an even bigger transfer.

The Mexican could have played for Manchester United when he was younger but missed out on the move because he could not get a work permit. That is no longer a problem as he now has a Greek passport.
