City poised to make a move for Friedel after Villa make a £2.5m bid for keeper

Manchester City are ready to make their move for Brad Friedel after being alerted to a £2.5million proposal from Aston Villa.

Martin O'Neill will bid for Blackburn Rovers keeper Friedel, as revealed by Sportsmail, confident he can land him — but that will trigger a reaction from City where manager Mark Hughes is a big fan.

O'Neill's trump card could be American owner Randy Lerner who is also an admirer of his compatriot.

Friedel, although 37, was surprised to hear his future is no longer secure with new manager Paul Ince looking around for younger replacements including Spurs' Paul Robinson.

O'Neill has inquired about Robinson and Celtic's Artur Boruc but found them too expensive.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will watch developments with interest as he also fancies Friedel.

Ince has also discussed Chelsea's Carlo Cudicini or loan deals for either Liverpool's Scott Carson or Manchester United's Ben Foster.

City will take a £5m loss on failed striker Georgios Samaras when the Greek international moves to Celtic for a knock down price of £1m in the coming days.

City bought Samaras from Heerenveen for £6m in January 2006 and agreed a provisional fee of £3m when they loaned him to Celtic last season. But City have accepted £1m less than that in order to smooth the switch to Parkhead.
