City's Richards avoids the cut

Micah Richards has been told he will not need surgery on a knee problem that he feared could rule him out of Fabio Capello's first game in charge of England.

But the defender will miss Manchester City's FA Cup clash at Sheffield United tomorrow.

Richards: No surgery required on knee

City boss Sven Goran Eriksson said: 'Richards needs five or six days' rest with a knee injury.

'Our medical people don't think Richards needs surgery so that is good news.'

Eriksson has added Daniel Sturridge to his squad for the cup tie after allowing Rolando Bianchi to join Lazio on loan.

The Italian wanted first-team football to press his national team claims.

Eriksson added: 'We bought eight players in the summer and seven of them have settled in well. Bianchi had more difficulties.

'Before he came here he was on the verge of going into the international team. His dream is to be involved with Italy in the European Championships and to do that he has to play.'

Eriksson dismissed the notion that one of the key reasons behind Bianchi's departure was English food.

The Swede said: 'The only way he didn't settle in was with the football. I think he liked it here and all the boys liked him. I think he struggled a little bit with the way we played.'

The former England manager has added his voice to the calls for Capello to hand David Beckham a 100th cap.

Eriksson admitted he would welcome him at City, if the midfielder considered a move. He said: 'I would agree 100 per cent that Beckham deserves his 100th England cap.'

Eriksson added: 'If he wants to come back to England I would say yes, come to Manchester City, but I can't see him coming back here.'
