Clash of titans is now a phoney war

It has long been billed as the clash of the titans. But when it comes to kick-off time, the line-ups are likely to underline the anticlimactic feeling surrounding Chelsea v Manchester United.

Pride and fear of embarrassment may yet play a part in final selections, but Sir Alex Ferguson has let it be known he has every intention of resting his superstars.

Ashley Cole: Out with an injury

Messrs Ronaldo, Giggs and Scholes are all sure to be taking a back seat.

Wayne Rooney won't be happy, but he is also destined to watch from afar as Ferguson keeps his cards close to his chest ahead of the sides' next face-off — the FA Cup Final.

Jose Mourinho will play a similar hand but lack of first-team bodies will force regulars into the fray.

Chelsea will also be anxious not to lose their Premiership record of being unbeaten at home under Mourinho.

TV: Sky Sports 1, 7.30pm (kick-off 8.0).
