Clattenburg took charge of Sunday's match just four days after Terry's team-mate Ashley Cole came under fire for his treatment of Mike Riley in the game against Tottenham.
But there was little dissent among the London rivals this time and Terry said: "Mark deserves a lot of credit. Before the game he spoke to me and William Gallas and just said that he wouldn't put up with any players coming towards him.

Man in the middle: Clattenburg, centre, lays down the law to Terry and Gallas at Stamford Bridge on Sunday
"He told us to go and tell the rest of the players that if they did he would book them. We both went away and told our players.
"It set the tempo from the start of the game and he got the respect he deserved. He was brilliant."
Terry's praise of Clattenburg is perhaps more surprising given he dishes out 4.16 cards per game on average — the third most prolific referee in the league.
Steve Bennett, who sent off Javier Mascherano at Old Trafford on Sunday, is much more lenient, averaging 3.35 cards per game.
