Cloudy looks clear choice

The progressive eight-year-old tackles fellow Aintree contender Mr Pointment in the Grimthorpe Chase, following exactly the same route as previous Liverpool hero Amberleigh House. Donald McCain's charge was a fluent winner in bottomless ground at Ayr when last seen, but has always been regarded as a better horse on a sounder surface and conditions at Doncaster should be perfect.
Grim pickings: Cloudy Lane
Earlier on the card, OSOLOMIO (Doncaster, next best, 1.50) swerves the Grade Two hurdle at Kelso in preference for a trip to Town Moor and the move can pay off for in-form trainer Jennie Candlish.
The five-year-old has made a smooth transition to his new vocation since joining her Leek stable from Alan Swinbank and he looked a potentially smart recruit at Chepstow last time.
Swinbank may have let a future hurdling winner slip through his grasp in Osolomio but IGNOTUS (Kelso, 4.15) has the chance to land a nice prize for the stable up in Scotland today. The six-year-old has attracted headlines for all the wrong reasons this term as he was banned under the non-triers rule at Catterick on his reappearance on New Year's Day before 'winning' at Newcastle when ineligible to run.
Somehow he is yet to register a win this term, but that is through no fault of his own and the only silver lining to emerge from the confusion at Newcastle is that he heads to Kelso without a penalty.
MALJIMAR (Newbury, 3.15) was immediately targeted at today's Connaught Gold Cup after routing a decent field at Cheltenham in January and I'm hopeful that plan can come to fruition this afternoon. The son of Un Desperado looked as though he had jumped in at halfway such was the way he travelled through a competitive handicap and responded superbly to Daryl Jacob's patient ride that day.
Hopefully, Jacob can repeat the tactics at Newbury and come out best of a battle with Regal Heights, who rates the biggest danger.
Today's lay is Harringay (Doncaster, 4.40).
