Clubs weigh up League's stance on Tevez

Chairmen and lawyers of the Gang of Five' clubs were on Tuesday night poring over a detailed document sent to them by the Premier League designed to quell the growing clamour for legal action over the punishment handed to West Ham for the Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano affair.

The document was sent to all 20 top-flight clubs, but will have particular significance for relegated Sheffield United plus Wigan, Charlton, Fulham and Middlesbrough, who have all vowed to back the Yorkshire club should they decide to take legal action against the Premier League.

Tevez: Allowed to play on

The League want to head off an expensive courtroom battle with clubs aggrieved that West Ham were not deducted points, rather than fined £5.5million, by an independent commission after being found in breach of rules regarding the third party ownership of players.

In addition, Sheffield United chairman Kevin McCabe and his Wigan counterpart Dave Whelan are unhappy that Tevez was allowed to play on after the commission's ruling at the end of last month.

However, the document is understood to include a detailed description of not only how the commission reached their verdict, but proof that West Ham had severed their ties with Tevez's owners, MSI, and thus were within their rights to field the Argentina player.

The Tevez and Mascherano saga took another twist yesterday when FIFA president Sepp Blatter appeared to indicate that the world governing body were intent on launching their own investigation.

Blatter also insisted the organisation had the power to overturn the Premier League's sanction of a fine in favour of a points deduction.

"We will look at this — and not only if we are asked, we will do it anyway," said Blatter.

"We will ask for the file once it has been decided how and why the decision was made. If we feel something was wrong in this decision then we have to open our file.

"We will monitor this situation very carefully and once this situation is dealt with by the League and the FA, we will ask for the files and have a look because we have the right and the responsibility to see how such cases are dealt with.

"The matter is linked with a club in Brazil — Corinthians — and with the ownership of this club and the ownership of the two players."

But Blatter said the transfers of Tevez and Mascherano from Corinthians had not breached any FIFA rules.

A Premier League statement last night relating to FIFA's interest said: "We have implemented our rulebook and processes to the letter and we are more than happy to give FIFA any assurances or explanations they need."
