Cole in doubt for Estonia trip

Steve McClaren is sweating on the fitness of Ashley Cole for England's Euro 2008 clash with Estonia next month after it emerged the Chelsea left back could face an ankle operation this month.

Cole delayed the decision while his team were chasing honours on four fronts but now Chelsea want him to have a minor operation after the FA Cup Final against Manchester United on May 19.

Cole: Operation

McClaren is already without Wayne Rooney (suspended), Andy Johnson (ankle) and Micah Richards (shin) for a game England cannot afford to lose and he is also waiting for Gary Neville to return.

If Cole, who goes back to Arsenal on Sunday for the first time since leaving last summer, has the operation after the FA Cup Final, it would almost certainly rule him out of England's clash with Brazil at Wembley on June 1 and the game in Estonia five days later.

Michael Owen will line up in an England B team against Albania at Turf Moor on May 25 despite the reservations of Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder.

Owen played his first game for his club last Monday after 10 months out with a knee injury and Roeder said: "I did not play Michael Owen in a reserve game — he did not need a reserve game before playing for the first team.

"Does Michael Owen need to play for England B before he puts on an England shirt again? I would say no."

Blackburn winger David Bentley and Bolton striker Kevin Davies will be named in the squad.
