Cole out but Terry aims to return

Ashley Cole is out of England's vital qualifier in Moscow on Wednesday but John Terry is ready to complete a remarkable comeback and captain the side against Russia.

Chelsea skipper Terry missed Saturday's 3-0 defeat of Estonia with a knee problem that might yet need surgery.

Injury misery: Ashley Cole after his knock against Estonia

He has a small piece of cartilage floating inside the knee that may have to be removed.

But Terry is suffering no discomfort and though a final decision will not be made until FA doctors have consulted Chelsea's medical team this morning, he is determined to travel to Moscow with the team later today.

Cole's ankle injury, which he sustained against Estonia, has ruled him out even though it is not as serious as first thought.

England coach Steve McClaren has called up Middlesbrough's Luke Young as cover. Either Joleon Lescott or Phil Neville is likely to move into the starting XI.

While England's players will train on a plastic pitch at an Altrincham school this morning as preparation for Wednesday, the FA have also asked their Russian counterparts to make sure that the Luzhniki Stadium pitch is the same for their training session tomorrow as it will be for the match the following evening.

When Gordon Strachan's Celtic side played Spartak Moscow there, they trained on a dry pitch and then had to play on one that had been heavily watered.

'We have asked the Russians to have it soaking wet when we train on it,' said McClaren.

An FA spokesman then added that 'a UEFA delegate will be present at England's training session as well as the match'. He added: 'They will see how we train and they will see how it is on matchday as well. It's up to UEFA how they manage that.'

Estonia accepted that England were much the better side at Wembley on Saturday but defender Raio Piiroja did accuse Wayne Rooney of 'dangerous' play.

'I finished the game very angry with Rooney and his behaviour,' he said. 'He is more dangerous with some of his play than some of the defenders. English players use their elbows when they jump and that is not good for football. I think Rooney should have had a yellow card but he is a big star and referees do not seem to punish famous players.'
