Coleman the chosen one for Coventry

Former Fulham and Real Sociedad manager Chris Coleman is expected to be named as Coventry City's manager in the next 48 hours.

It would be new owner Ray Ranson's first major appointment since taking over in December and follows last week's sacking of Iain Dowie after a year in the job.

Ranson has been looking for a younger manager with fresh ideas and believes he has that in 37-year-old Coleman, who is being given another chance to show what he can achieve in the domestic game.

Coleman will take over after City's gameat Sheffield Wednesday tonight and club officials were locked in contract negotiations last night.

Ranson will want an improvement after the humiliation of Saturday's 5-0 FA Cup defeat by West Bromwich Albion.

Coleman is thought to have been offered a three-year contract.

Ranson said: "We've been working very hard since we made the decision to find a replacement.

"That decision was not taken lightly and the decision to target the man we've gone for has not been taken lightly either.

"But we believe the next manager has to be the right person who underpins what should be the foundations for going forward and the decision has to be right for the long term."

Nigel Pearson will take his first match as manager of Southampton tonight against Plymouth with a task to win over fans who are lukewarm about him — and against a background of a potential boardroom coup that could threaten his job before he has even been formally unveiled.

The 44-year-old was appointed by chairman Leon Crouch as a reaction to Saturday's FA Cup shock defeat at Bristol Rovers.

But Crouch, who lost patience with caretakers Jason Dodd and John Gorman, is himself expected to step down if Irish cinema tycoon Tom Anderson succeeds with his bid to buy the 30 per cent of shares owned by former chairman Rupert Lowe.
