Collina calls for players to respect the ref

Refereeing doyen Pierluigi Collina has urged footballers to show more respect.

The Italian, a 2002 World Cup referee and now his country's referee designator, believes players need to understand the impact their actions have on watching youngsters who see them as role models.

He said: "The game could be more beautiful if the players showed respect towards the rules, the referee on the field of play.

Looking over his shoulder: Collina has receieved threats

"There's a big need for respect in football not only towards officials but between players.

"They have to be aware of the big impact their behaviour could have on youngsters, for instance."

It emerged on Monday that Collina has had a police escort for the last month.

The 47-year-old took up his role in charge of designating officials for Serie A and Serie B games last summer in the aftermath of the match-fixing scandal.

The man who had earned so much respect as a referee was employed to bring back a sense of trust, fairness and sincerity to the Italian game.

However, somebody has not accepted his appointment - and threatening letters sent to his Tuscan home put the police on alert.
