Conceded a penalty and sent off for swearing at a linesman - not a great night for Spurs defender

Tottenham's Canada captain Paul Stalteri had a miserable night as his side suffered a 2-0 defeat by South Africa.

The Spurs full-back conceded a penalty when he brought down Thembinkosi Fanteni and was sent off 11 minutes from time for swearing at a linesman.

Teko Modise scored twice in the first half in South Africa's victory, only its second outright win in nine games and the first time it has scored more than one goal in 4 ½ months.

The a match was marked by mediocre, cautious play on a humid night in the coastal city which wills stage this weekend's preliminary draw for the 2010 World Cup.

South Africa had not scored in its previous five games - including a 1-0 loss to the United States on Saturday, and had not scored more than one goal in its previous nine. Its last multiple goal game was a 4-0 African Cup qualifying victory over Chad on June 2.

Its only victory since was a 1-0 friendly win over Botswana on September 29, although it prevailed on penalties against Zambia on October 24 in a friendly after a 0-0 draw.
