Cook cries foul as he misses out on medal after controversial call

Aaron Cook missed out on a medal after the 17-year-old lost 4-1 to China's Guo Zhu in the one-off battle for the bronze, having been controversially beaten in his previous bout.

Earlier, Cook was left in tears after losing his semi-final in dramatic circumstances.

He was locked at 5-5 with Italy's Mauro Sarmiento with seconds remaining when he was struck by a wild swipe from his European opponent.

It looked as though the kick had been delivered too late to score but the judges awarded the point, prompting a howl of protest from Cook.

But the decision stood, giving Sarmiento the narrowest of wins and leading to an outpouring of grief from the British teenager.

Cook said: "I'm gutted. I thought I had him right at the end but that's the way the sport works."

His coach Nelson Miller was furious with the judging. He said: "I'm not happy because it was after the bell but that was the best performance ever by Aaron Cook, so I'm not that disappointed."

Earlier, Cook had demonstrated his potential beating Venezuela's Carlos Vasquez Carvajal 5-2 in the quarter-finals. Prior to that, he had pummelled Anju Jason, of the Marshall Islands, 7-0.
