Cook forces himself into contention as England win again

Captain Paul Collingwood admitted Alastair Cook had added to England's selection problems after the opener's century helped them to a comfortable warm-up victory over Canterbury.

Essex left-hander Cook hit two sixes and 20 fours in an innings of 138 from 140 balls as England enjoyed a seven-wicket win with 7.1 overs remaining to complete their preparations for Tuesday's opening Twenty20 international in Auckland in pleasing fashion.

It followed an equally-impressive 51 off 66 balls in Saturday's triumph and propelled Cook into the selectors' thinking for next week's two matches.

"He's come out today and played fantastically well," said Collingwood. "Twenty20 cricket is a different form of the game and we're going to have to get the right team to win the game on Tuesday. He's given us a bit of a problem but a few of them have.

"He can adapt to other forms of the game. He's come in today and he is starting to hit the ball a bit harder and backing himself a lot more. The good thing about him is that he does learn quickly."

Collingwood was also happy with the improvement in England's bowling attack over the two days, adding: "We were a little bit rusty yesterday in our mindset and in our plans, and we probably didn't bowl as straight as we should have done. "But you can understand that because it's our first outing of one-day cricket for some time."

And Collingwood insisted that next week's Twenty20 matches would not be treated as further practice for the five-match one-day series and believes they have a squad capable of doing well.

"It's fair to say we need to adapt to that form of the game," he admitted. "But I think we've got the players here who can play Twenty20 cricket and do well at it."
