Hicks was today flying to Merseyside for the hugely-anticipated game.

But reports in the Liverpool Echo revealed Hicks and George Gillett were urged by Merseyside police not to attend the match.

Due to the ill-feeling against them among Reds fans, fears were expressed about their safety if they arrived at the stadium.

Hicks was understood to be very keen on coming to Anfield and was expected to take his seat on the front row of the director's box.

The advice was also given to Gillett, but he is unable to come to Anfield because of other commitments.

A source close to Hicks said: "There was a discussion that was relevant to both Tom and George about the difficulties about them attending.

"But Mr Hicks decided he wanted to be at Anfield and is looking forward to the game."

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "We can confirm that advice has been given to Liverpool Football club regarding the attendance of the club's owners, however we are not in a position to discuss any individual's safety.

"As with any other football event, the safety of those attending has been reviewed.

"Merseyside Police has deployed the appropriate number of police officers alongside stewards to tonight's match."

The Dubai-based consortium DIC will be at the stadium tonight after accepting an invitation from George Gillett.

Amanda Staveley, the group's spokeswoman, was today pictured staying at a Chester hotel.

Relations between Hicks and Gillett have collapsed in recent weeks with the pair barely on speaking terms.

Richie Pedder, chairman of Liverpool FC supporters club, said: "We had heard word that Mr Hicks was coming over.

"I just hope that everything passes off peacefully."
