Coppell a surprise contender for Republic of Ireland job

Reading manager Steve Coppell has emerged as a surprise contender to be the next manager of the Republic of Ireland.

He is the choice of the FAI's three-man committee of ex-Ireland midfielder Ray Houghton, Under 21 manager Don Givens and former England coach Don Howe, who have been talking for more than a month to find possible replacements for Steve Staunton, who was sacked in November.

Coppell, who has developed the careers of Irish strikers Kevin Doyle and Stephen Hunt, has led the committee to believe he would consider a move into international management but they want to know if he would make that switch now or at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, the Reading boss will pick another of his Irish discoveries, Shane Long, against Spurs in Tuesday's FA Cup replay and has told unsettled England Under 21 striker Leroy Lita to stop moaning.

Lita is angry at becoming cup-tied, but Coppell said: 'No one has phoned up about him. Leroy will be playing and it is an opportunity for him to put a marker down.'

Tottenham's £16.5million striker Darren Bent will also be in the shop window, with the club ready to take a £4.5m loss on him if they can find a buyer in the transfer window.

Juande Ramos has been told he must sell either Bent or Jermain Defoe if he wants to sign Sevilla's Alexander Kerzhakov.

The Tottenham manager is close to landing Middlesbrough's England winger Stewart Downing, whose agent has admitted he wants to move. A deal close to £10m should be done in time for Downing to face Sunderland on Saturday.
