Kompany's future at Hamburg had been called into question after he fell out with club bosses over his continued involvement for Belgium at the Olympic Games in Beijing.

Despite their money problems, City have struck a deal for Kompany, 22, and Hamburg president Bernd Hoffmann claimed the transfer hinged only on the player passing a medical.

Hoffmann said: 'We received an enquiry from Manchester asking whether Vince could imagine moving immediately and, depending on the medical examination, we quickly agreed to this transfer.’

Meanwhile, City midfielder Michael Johnson is set to agree a new contract after further talks on Wednesday.
